ladies, here's a whistle so you don't get raped.

Yes, today they handed out little whistles with the phone numbers to Medical and the Chaplain's office to all the female soldiers/sailors/marines/airwomen on post.

I mean, I get the idea behind it, but I feel like they've really singled out the women as sheep in a horde of wolves.  I know there has been an increase in sexual assault incidents on women but we KNOW it happens to men too. 

I am campaigning for an all whistle or no whistle policy.

I've been a bit of a Mirah junkie every since I first heard her a long, long, long time ago in Olympia, Washington. 

I'm moving back to Olympia in about two months so I really have been getting back into the musical scene there in preparation.

10 things, 10 people, 10 minutes (or so)

I have been tagged by navelgazer and tried to do my best to expose ten things about me people here don't know.  Here's what I came up with in ten minutes or so:

1. I love to dance.  I am shameless about it.  I will dance anytime, anywhere, anyhow.
2. I am apt with languages and inept at numbers.  My mother says this is because of an incident where she dropped me on my noggin.  Hah!  I actually took calculus in high school and even passed the Advanced Placement (AP) exam.  However, it still takes me 20 minutes to do an anti-derivative and two minutes to translate a paragraph in German.
3. I have a secret passion for puppetry.  I even wanted to major in puppetry in college but I couldn't find a one that offered it in Los Angeles.  When I went to film school I was a part of the group 'Minorities of the Film Production Major' and we worked on projects focused on cultural awareness.  The other members of the group noticed all my ideas centered around puppets.  That's when I got the nickname muppet baby.
4. I'm sure most of you know about Maslow's hierarchy of need.  My hierarchy, however, is more like this:  sleep, water, Josh Ritter, friends & family, air, 80's music, vegan food and hockey.
5. I have trouble sharing my emotions with others.  This becomes especially apparent when I'm either upset or overjoyed.  In fact, the two emotions appear the same to other people because I fall almost completely silent.  It's a type of emotional shock.  I've been told that I can be very cold by people I love very much.  It makes me sad.
6. I adore my mother.  I really do.  She's the most amazing person I've ever met.  I think I've lived a lot of my life trying to make her proud.  Ok, I know I have.  I told her that once and she told me, "Honey, I'm always proud of you." 
7. Growing up, I was a compulsive hair cutter.  When left alone with a pair of scissors I would always have less hair than I started off with.  This is one of the reasons my mother gave me a bowl hair cut.  If I find any photos, I will definitely post them.
8. I always feel two ways about things.  If I am happy about something, I always feel a little guilty.  If I'm sad, I always get a bit of joy out of it.  What is that?  Must be the loon in me.
9. My extended family is very religious.  Sort of.  Two of my great aunts were nuns and one of my great uncles was a priest.  Emphasis on the word were.  Now one of my aunts is an almost-out-of-the-closet lesbian (her partner died years ago, she's 86 years old but still not entirely out of the closet) and the priest married the nun (she's my great aunt-in-law)! 
10. I am 5 feet and 8.7 inches tall.

GI Film Festival

I was doing my daily news browsing, and saw that the GI Film Festival is having its first annual hub-bub on Memorial Day weekend.  I would probably just go because I am so fond of Gary Sinise.

 

 Oh, I just noticed:  Chuck Norris will be there too!!  I have a friend who knows a million Chuck Norris jokes.  He likes to tell them while we're all in formation and try to get someone in trouble for laughing too hard.

New Bruin!

I had a great little hiatus during which I found out that I will be going to UCLA in the fall. 

 

I was very worried about getting accepted because I applied as an out-of-state transfer as opposed to the easier method as an in-state transfer. 

 

I've started focusing my energy on the soldier to student transition.  I'm attempting to remove phrases like roger, wilco, lima charlie and hooah as to not immediately alienate myself from other students.  I'm also considering removing my tattoo of the Sergeant's Creed.  I'm kidding.

 

So, I've got two more months in the Middle East, another two months in the Army.  Everything seems to be working itself out.  Phew!

No More Work!

I probably won't be back on the computer much in the next few days.  I'm getting four days off of work instead of a trip to Qatar.

 

This is actually good news, since the barracks in Qatar are overcrowded and being there just brings back too many memories from my last deployment.  I really do love Qatar, it's such a culture shock of Middle East meets Capitalist West.

So, hopefully I'll have some time to finish my physical science homework, organize music, send packages and take lots of naps.

There is also a bazaar of merchants coming on post tomorrow.  They sell a variety of locally made and grown goods.  I have never actually gone to one of these bazaars, since I usually sleep all day, but I've only heard good things.  I hope to have some photos soon. :)
